McAfee update damages Windows XP/SP3 computers

For those who have been affected by getting an update this week, there are fixes now available. A tool can be downloaded to run from a USB stick on the affected computer (or burned to a CD for those computers where the update damaged access to the USB ports). The tool is available from http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/tools/SDAT5958_EM.exe

Avast updated to version 5 – still Free!

Avast released a new update this week to their free, very good, antivirus program. It looks different – instead of a blue ball as the icon (on the desktop and in the tray at the bottom right) it’s orange, with a white more stylized “a” on it. And the voice that talks to you, reporting that “The antivirus database has been updated” has changed from male to female. Go ahead and get the updated install file at http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/ – click on “Download latest version” on the upper right of the page.
